1. My target behavior to change will be to quit cussing.

2. I want to quit cussing because entering my big 20's decade, I want to be able to have enough self control to stop cussing. Although useful, it is disrespectful to most and it is not a necessary part of my vocabulary.

3. I will measure my behavior change by adding 1 penny to a jar every time i cuss. This way i can see how many times I cuss a day/week/month and make the necessary changes.

4. Since I don't speak much to others aside from my family and friends,
I did not cuss that much for the past week.
Due to the fact that I stayed home doing homework.
I guesstimate that I cussed about 20-30 times out of 7 days. Which to me is very good.
Words I use are F**K, S**T, D**N, and C**P.
If I were with friends at all times for 7 days, every other sentence could possible include cussing.

Triggers: On any given occasion, I will cuss when irritated or annoyed.
Intensity: I notice the intensity of cussing goes down as I get angry. When I get angry I think more logically and try to resolve problems ASAP.
Situation: Times where the behavior is at its peak is when I am with my friends.

5. Effective ways of changing this behavior would be to
a.) Be witty- Use alternative words
b.) Be smart- Enlarge my vocabulary library
c.) Money Motive- Pay my girlfriend for every time I cuss
d.) Be mature- Setting the right example for children

  1. Hey Steve, cussing is a problem that affects many people today, especially with cussing so endorsed with such sites as www.fml.com and frequent cussing on various media programs. With cussing so engrained in our culture, we are losing the eloquence of the english language. Keeping this in mind, this behavior change is a wonderful idea. I believe your penny in a jar technique is great. Personally when i was trying to stop my cussing, i did 10 push ups everytime i cussed. I wish you all the best with your cussing.

  2. I honestly think that being able to quit cussing would be a great way to lead a more optimistic and healthier life. :) I agree with Clarence that through this, you would be able to revive the English language in your own little way. I wish you good luck in changing this behavior and I hope that you will be able to fulfill this goal and inspire others to quit cussing too. :)

  3. Cussing is something that we are constantly surrounded by. I think it is great that you want to try and change this :) I think your ideas about how to stop are a really good idea because you would be giving up something that is valuable to you. I think the most important thing is to just become aware of when you are doing it, and find other ways to express yourself. Goodluck! :)

  4. I really like that you are trying to stop cussing, now while I cannot say that I am "perfect" because I do let the occasional word slip up here and there, but the way I keep myself from cussing is knowing that I have a younger brother, who tends to really "learn" things from me, and because I try to be a good older sister, I never want him to learn the bad aspects of my personality. That's how I myself control cussing. I do like the money idea, it reminds me of a Simpson's episode once and I think that would really work, and once you fill up the jar you can reward yourself with a prize! (:

  5. Steve, always being the good person. So many people cuss these days as if it weren't a problem or bad habit and it's good that you're trying to stop. I honestly don't notice when you cuss, but maybe that's because i'm so used to hearing it that it's just normal conversation now. I know you will be able to stop cussing since you're not an angry person, unless you're stressed about psych! jk. It seems like you're doing fine, but here's a suggestion. Instead of giving up all cuss words, focus on not saying a specific cuss word each week. That way you're results will last longer, just like going on a crash diet doesn't lead to lasting results, but taking you're time leads to healthier habits. Or you can put a quarter in a jar every time you cuss, you'll be rich within a month!
